The Functional Organization of a System
A well functioning body is a whole system that is designed to survive and reproduce in its environment where all the parts are playing a more or less cooperative role. And so one way that I understand multi-level selection theory is rather than focusing exclusively on individuals, we can also look at how individuals become part of larger functionally organized groups by means of cooperation. They always lived in the context of small and for the most part highly cooperative groups, even when those groups were warring with other groups.
