When the spikelets are secile or borne directly along an elongated axis, as in interapogan melicoides, the inflorescence is a spike. If the spikelets borne by the axis are all stalked, however short the petacles may be, it is a raceme. In paspalum scabiculatu or panicum givonic, the whole inflorescent is a compound racine.
