Archalaeus wanted to starve Sella out and force him into an engagement. He committed all his forces to the valley of Kairunea anyway, carrying on with the original communication chokeoff plan. The Pontians aren't able to take advantage of their huge numbers in this confined space. And as Sella also foresaw, the Pontians have no favorable route for retreat.
