There was a possibility that the passengers were alive and trapped in the sub, which would just be a nightmare. Search efforts expanded to the point where many different countries were involved. Over the course of five days an area the size of Massachusetts was searched. The weather conditions were bad, GPS didn't work underwater, the depth was very deep, and the water was very cold.
