Frazier: Merck had been around for 125 years. They had a very clear mission and purpose. So when I became CEO, I did not think Merck needed me to define a course for it. We had had a fallow period for about 10 years in terms of R&D. My job wasn't to establish a purpose. It was to reconfirm a purpose.
