Scarlet Fever - What Caused It?
The first case of scarlet fever in the archipelago of Madeira was reported in 1806. They reached South America in 1829, Greenland in 1847 and both Australia and New Zealand in 1848. Although scarlet fever had been reported in the northeastern United States for centuries, the first case reported in California wasn't until 1849. Some researchers have found a correlation between scarlet fever and wheat prices.
Scarlet fever is treatable with antibiotics, but in the middle of the 19th century, it was the leading cause of death in children in some parts of the world. Today, there are several ongoing mysteries about the disease.
