Scarlet Fever - What Caused It?

The first case of scarlet fever in the archipelago of Madeira was reported in 1806. They reached South America in 1829, Greenland in 1847 and both Australia and New Zealand in 1848. Although scarlet fever had been reported in the northeastern United States for centuries, the first case reported in California wasn't until 1849. Some researchers have found a correlation between scarlet fever and wheat prices.
