Spectral evidence was used against Bridget Bishop, the first person executed for witchcraft in Salem in 1692. It helped convict a 71-year-old grandmother, too. Not everyone was okay with the use of spectral evidence in these trials. Even Cotton Mather suggested that spectral evidence be used with caution.
