The Working Time Directive in the NHS

Doctors working in the NHS, Britain's National Health Service, can only be scheduled to work 48 hours per week and if they request up to 72. But any ayes requires doctors to opt out of the directive as part of their contract. The contracts we've seen show that four times a year doctors might have to work an additional week potentially making three continuous weeks of 24-7 duty. Augustine says sometimes he was so tired he felt he was in danger of compromising patient safety. Nuffield hospital where Augustine was working told us that the health and well-being of its patients are its priority.
