There were 26 men who went to Everest on those first expeditions, 21, 1922, 1924. Six of them missed the war. Sandy Irvin, too young, long staff, too old, one a school teacher, another diplomat, but 20 saw the worst of the fighting. And I set out to find out where each one of those 21 men it turned out to be, had been every single day of the First World War. That's an amazing task.
