The idea is that we've been comparing animals to a very weird type of human. It's simply the way that we might frame issues or think about the kinds of behaviors that will be evidence of certain things with a weird mentality. So for instance, one behavior that we talk about in this paper that the comparative fanatology literature does not talk about is the behavior of pets who feed on their dead owners. One reason might be simply that cannibalism is not practiced in weird societies.
