William's Conquest of England
When william crossed the channel, he claimed england. The way that these people had arranged their society had no bearing or leg macy in the eyes of the normans. And so as far as william was concerned, they had no inherent right to whatever lands and titles they claimed to hold. So when these englishmen made their oaths, they became vassals, vassals who, as far as the normans were concerned, had recently rebelled against their rightful lord. As for those mutual bonds of obligation and a king's duty of protection, whatever. It's done. Yius ubmitted.
