Part One: The (Male) Doctor Who Redesigned Vaginas
Behind the Bastards
The Story of James Burke
Between 1954 and 1966, Dr. James Burke began experimenting on unknowing unconscious patients with his own variations of the standard episiotomy repair after childbirth. The women he'd given his modified surgery to, he claimed, told him their sexual experience had improved after childbirth. In 1963, nearly a decade into his casual experimenting with vaginas, James Burke's second wife filed for divorce. Since she is the one who filed, we're able to look at this divorce through the lens of someone besides Dr. Burke.
