High intensity interval training is pushing something, pushing a body to about their VO2 max or maybe even higher for very short periods of time. We actually see some really awesome health benefits from high intensity interval training in patients with cardiovascular disease and congestive heart failure. But that's not the same as going for a long half hour run. That's a very, very specific type of training.
