Crimea was pretty much destined to be something of a potential flashpoint. It's a peninsula that the Russian Empire conquered and, I mean, historically everyone from the Scythians onwards can lay claim to owning it. As far as most Russians are concerned, it is actually historically Russian. And then there's also the presence of these Russian forces and these bases at places like Simfero-Pole. What happened to Crimea really matters to Moscow.
