Why Not Celebrate Columbus Day?
The idea of celebrating Columbus in the United States is or was a revisionist project intended to integrate recent Italian immigrants into mainstream white American society. "I am not someone who wants to rename absolutely everything named after somebody who was kind of an a-hole, but Columbus Day should not exist," Batali says. No one should celebrate or honor Columbus, whether he's living or dead.
