The First Black Woman to Have a Piece of Work Collected by the Tate in 1987

J.W. Waterhouse's painting, Hyless and the Nymphs, was taken down from a Manchester Art Gallery wall in 2018. The decision to take it away came out of a wider conversation about who decides what work will be shown. "I love that people recognize me ... but when I'm told oh, you're the first, I kind of think, oh, they weren't expecting me or anybody like me," she says.
