The Importance of the Second World War in Russia
At least six Russian regions have scrapped the 9th of May victory day parades that mark the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany amid fears over Ukrainian strikes. The governor of Saratov announced the parade would not go ahead because of these safety concerns I do think this is very significant one cannot overstate the importance of the Second World War in the Russian national memory Victory day has gradually become a core linchpin of the country's modern identity. It will no doubt be a frustration to the Kremlin yet another example of how this war is impacting Russian society just not in the ways that many predicted Thank you very much Francis.
