The Challenges of Restructuring a Company in China

The first overseas IPO undertaken by a Chinese firm was only in 1994 and I joined investment banking in 1993. Many of the Chinese companies were not even companies under the centrally planned economic system free economic reforms. In order to bring them to overseas public markets you have to re-structure them into joint stock companies. It was very complicated work and our bankers were not experienced with doing this kind of work. And that's why after a while, 1997, 1998 after a lab, JP Morgan simply sat down, his investment banking business in Hong Kong.
