In 2008 an explosion at the West Virginia plant sent metal projectiles weighing hundreds of pounds in all directions. Bayard crop science announced that it would reduce its production of MIC. Some residents applauded the news and agreed that it was a step in the right direction. Others pointed to the fact that the town's economy is built on the back of the chemical industry.
