Joan Fontaine: The New Mr. Winter
Over 20 actresses auditioned for this film, or at least that they had kind of considered for the role. Joan Fontaine got picked because Hitchcock thought that she understood what it was to have a force that was stronger than her. He just wanted to exploit that terrible inadequacy in her personality. And I think there was this thing as well about Hitchcock wanting to hire an actress who wasn't bankable at the time and make her into a star. So a very egocentric thing, but at the same time, it gave her that spotlight.
