The first person who does sleep with a wife is the husband in nature. This is a novel that has a great deal to say about earning a living or indeed failing to earn a living. And it's very easy to sentimentalise Wessex - there are different kinds of Wessexes. It's fertile, it's beautiful and can also be relentless and grim. You wonder how she could have put up with those immense days doing this literally bending, backbreaking. She's exploited by Farmer Grobe. He's an interesting minor character
