The Long Term View of Wholesale Power Prices in Japan

In the short term wholesale prices, all are expected to come down from historical highs in recent years. Hokkaido and Tohoku will see the lowest prices of around 10 yen or 7 cents per kilowatt hour as a transmission upgrade plans might unlock significant amount of renewable potential there. In the mid to long term, we do see a number of factors driving prices higher, to around 12 yen or 9 cents perkilowatt hour for most regions in Japan due to the introduction of carbon price or higher gas prices.
