The History of Ukraine
In 1932, Stalin famously did the collectivization where all farmland was expropriated and brought under government control. Some of the greatest resistance against collectivization came in Ukraine. In 1941, Ukrainians were very happy to support anybody who would attack the Soviet regime. After the Second World War, Ukraine found its feet and they draw the well. And then we get to the 1986 Chernobyl accident. The Chernobyl nuclear reactor is physically located inside Ukraine. So there were not a whole lot of happy memories of Soviet rule. But when the 1991 referendum came, 90% chose to leave it.
