There's a very active movement in the District of Columbia to change this status quo. The fight for statehood became the kind of the main goal, the driving goal for city officials eight years ago. And it actually got relatively far. House of Representatives voted twice on a bill that would have made D.C. the 51st state. But Senate has never done the same because of filibuster basically.
