The Legend of the Sandaloth

In the Bible, Boas buys land for himself and gets a widow to be his wife. He does this by taking off his sandal as part of an exchange with another redeemer. The custom is said to have originated in Egypt where it was associated with walking on soil. In other words, if you were trying to claim property or territory, you would often walk on that ground.
