Melanie Smith was found guilty on five counts of murder and one of threatening to destroy or damage property by fire. The judge called her actions exceptional wickedness almost unparalleled in its consequences. Leanna's parents remained dignified after the sentence, even saying how sorry they felt for Smith's family. Landlord Jay Liprott accepted that his failings as a landlord has exposed his tenants to the risk of death or serious injury in the event of a fire. After legal discussion more suitable for another podcast, Lipcot eventually pleaded guilty to a new indictment of failing to take the required safety precautions that would have prevented the deaths.
