Tom bradley was newly emboldened at the age of 73. He thought he might finally be able to take down his long time nemesis. The day after the mayor announced his new commission, he called darrell gates to his office. At that meeting, i called upon chief gates to resign as chief of police. I feel that i have been disgracedndefamed, and i think it is a tragedy. It will not heal the wounds of the city. Later that same day gates ended a fund raising luncheon in the san fernando valley with a standing ovation.
