Is the Incubation Period Relevant to Vaccines?

Dixon patrick writes, dear teve, greetings from arlington, massachusetts. I don't understand how there is so little discussion of relevance of the length of incubation periods to the effectiveness of vaccines. The really great vaccenes, like smallpox, m m r and poleo are against viruses with relatively long incubation periods. Do you see any flaw in that logic?
