Do You Have a Cascade Bias?
When we're not hearing from everyone in the room, that is often the result of a very particular kind of bias called the cascade bias. The first person who speaks up is going to be white and most likely male. Sometimes for cultural reasons, sometimes for corporate culture reasons, just by conditioning, there are cultures that train people to be quiet. And so we lose those opinions by allowing that cascade effect and not even realizing it's happening. That's the bigger issue. We don't realize it's happening when it'm happening.
