Is That a Good Strategy?

I've had that experience myself. I took a moderately big loss in 2011. It was about 5% on a position, where basically in Euroland, longer dated puts were very expensive relative to short dated ones. And so you never want to leave those open ended positions too much to any tenor at any maturity. If you do, then there are certain things that can happen that can really put you under pressure. So that's not a trade I would do, but conceptually it's kind of the right trade. Don't go and buy volatility where it's rich and buy it where it's cheap.
