The tragedy of the story for me is that his daughter really believes in him. He'll say things like, i'm going to miss her childhood. And then he just thinks, i'll never really get that from letters or from spending just a bit of time with her. I think you're right, he's sort of selfishly thinking of himself as a parent rather than her needs as a child. Some of the most tender reflections can be rationalizations. So the story would be far worse if he was, you know, there was real redemption, right?"
