Winter Layering for the Legs

In the summer most hikers wear trekking pants and then when it gets cold they add their rain pants on top of it. The problem with this system is that if you're sitting down on sharp rocks or otherwise abusing your lower body by abrading it against the various sharp things of the natural environment you're going to tear up your base layer pretty bad. So I like to gravitate towards a winter system that's really really simple. And so making a layering change to your lower body becomes an exercise in complexity that does not exist to the same extent it did in the summer.
