Social baseline theory is basically just the brain's assumption that there's going to be someone there to lift the table. When there isn't, the brain sets off an alarm. We mount a stress response from nothing more than the perception that we're alone. Our baseline state is to be with other people. And so being alone can feel sublime if you don't have to be.
