Lash's father in law set him up early on with different kinds of publishing opportunities. One time, he was asked to write a for word book about charles dickens' visit to america. But the American progressive optimism is just something he has no sense of affinity for and has very, very deeply developed reasons for for obosing it. So then marxism becomes attractive to him, because it helps to explain some, many of these things that he thinks have gone wrong in America. And culminating, perhaps, in this phase of his life, with his last chapter of the culture of narcissism.
