Eugenius was elevated to the rank of Augustus in 393. He sent ambassadors to the Eastern court to ask for formal recognition. Theodosius had been arranging things so that his two sons would inherit the empire, and Eugenius was now messing those plans up. Once again, the Empire was on the path to civil war.
