The Mid-Atlantic accent became so standard within Hollywood that even non-American actors and actresses were expected to use it. That included English performers like Vivian Lee, who's probably most famous for her role as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind. During her heyday in Hollywood in the 1930s and 40s, she regularly used the accent, even when off stage. But a couple of decades later, after she had returned to England, she reverted back to her natural accent.
