How to Have Difficult Conversations About Race
I think a lot of people like to mobilize shame and blame because not because it's effective but because it's more cathartic. So I always ask what do we want to get out of this? Let's just be clear about what we want to be true on the other end of this interaction. If it doesn't matter to us, you know, that this person changes or does something different, then let's keep doing what we're doing. But if it matters to us that the person on the otherend makes a different choice or behaves in a new way, then we have to be so very thoughtful about how we include them in this conversation.
