There's a newer type of actual portation being worked on or researched called quantum teleportation. Tyson: If you could just keep going faster and faster, you'd eventually just want to instantly transport from one place to another. That would be the ultimate convenience. But again, you arrive at a whole bunch of logistical and physical questions about what is the limit of how fast you can move some place.
