How Does a Black Hole Evaporate?

Hawking realized that black holes can only grow over a very long time scale. A large black hole will eventually not only evaporate but explode in the final stages together. In quantum mechanics, you can't ever really say that there's nothing there. Nothing is actually this very subtle possibility of things kind of existing and then disappearing again.
