It's easy to forget that a little over a month ago China was in the grip of angry protests like this one. It was a reaction to the country's so-called zero COVID policy, a super stringent no-holds barred approach to containing the virus come what may. As for the economy, President Xi Jinping told us it has still been growing by more than 4%. But independent economists reckon that's not true. Chezad Karzi, managing director of the China beige book, The Biggest Private Data Collection Network on China, says that growth has turned negative in the last few months.
