Mac OS X - The Orange Dot on the Mac OS

The microphone is active on the different apple devices running these softwares, you see the little orange dot. Apple tobts this as a feature because you want to know that if you aren't on the phone or a face time call or yore, not actually recording audio. The developer of a popular audio visual graphic client, isadora, called it an unacceptable thing.
