Peasant Land Ownership in France

Peasants played an important role in the feudal society that france was structured around. Historians debate just how much french land was owned by the peasantry, but the figure lies somewhere between 25 and forty %. Peasants often didn't own enough land to provide for themselves or deliver a significant enough surplus to produce to sell at the market. Many peasants were a combination of tenant farmers, share croppers and laborers who also worked for wages or created jobs for ale.
