Plagues in history have always been mediated by the strength and stability of society at the time that they struck. Athens' plague, which killed one fourth of its population over a two year period, is lost forever. A century later, the plague of cyprian comes to the urban world of rome. And in some sense, it is arguably the force that propels europe towards 800 years of poverty, warfare, rural living and arguably darkness.
