The opening to China starting in 2001 did in fact decimate American manufacturing, and that it was very geographically specific. The other thing is that by their lights, China becomes much more assertive geopolitically and militarily. And the theory that China would quote-unquote converge into this harmoniously into this US-led economic order was just comprehensively discarded. They went from seeing China as potentially a benign partner to active threat.
