Historian Elizabeth Keene of the Joseph Smith Papers describes some of that outcry. Critics in and outside of Nauvoo respond very strongly to the destruction of the Nauvoo expositor press. They feel it represents Joseph Smith acting above or outside the law, using the law to his own benefit. And to be this brutal dictator who quells anyone who will speak against him.
