The story of Tulipmania might help people to feel sane in a world that's gone mad, but the problem is that McKay's story was mostly untrue. According to Anne Goldger, a professor of European history at USC, it was impossible to find record of a single bankruptcy attributable to Tulipmania. All of the outlandish stories of economic ruin came from propaganda pamphlets published by Dutch Calvinists worried that speculation and consumerism would lead to societal decay. But there just weren't that many people involved in the tulip bubble and the economic repercussions were small. Historians William Quinn and John Turner who wrote a boom and bust a global history of financial bubbles say the Tulipmania had negligible
