The Cold War and Nuclear Weapons
The Cold War was a decades long race for bigger and better death machines. The phrase that came to be used about the amount of nuclear destructive power was overkill. Back in the 60s the US had enough nuclear weapons to destroy the Soviet Union 50 times over. And so in practice what that led to was each side having the capacity to destroy the other many many times over.
