The 36,000 war memorials that we know about are the biggest public art installation in british history. They were each uniquely and individually thought up, commissioned and paid for by local communities who wanted somewhere to remember their loss. And none of them were paid for by the government. It was local communities who raised the money. Tore holes in the fabric of society when men went away during first world war.
