We're all influenced, aren't we? By our upbringing, by family, by a culture, by society. So there's t e sort of horizontal pressures, and then there's the vertical authority. And i think, again, what was fascinating to me in exploring these themes for the book was the attempt to think about those different kinds of pressure. There were claims post war that you could just divide the world up into the so called free world, and on the other hand, the totalitarin world.
