The Impetus to Develop a Test for Hepatitis B
The Japanese health ministry was working on a hepatitis B vaccine. The emperor at the time, Hirohito had developed cancer and was needing a lot of blood transfusions. It also led to like briefly, they called Hepatitis C the emperor's new virus. This wasn't a grassroots effort from patients up. This was large pharmaceutical companies creating the hepatitis C panic among patient advocacy groups that weren't real.
